A survivor of the infamous 1912 Titanic nautical disaster, this third-class passenger gave up her seat on a lifeboat to make room for her children and was rescued after going down with the ship.

Trivia

After her rescue, she recovered in New York City's St. Vincent's Hospital. Though her legs healed from the extended exposure to icy water, she developed severe, chronic asthma as a result of her ordeal.

Born Rhoda Mary Hunt, she spent her youth in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, England.

Family Life

Her marriage to Stanton Abbott resulted in sons named Rossmore and Eugene, both of whom died during the Titanic disaster despite their mother's attempts to save them. After divorcing her first husband, she married George Charles Williams; the couple lived in both England and Florida, U.S.A.

Associated With

She was ultimately saved by RMS Titanic Fifth Officer Harold Lowe, who ushered her into a lifeboat after she had already been swept to sea.
